One of the earliest skyscrapers, the Park Row Building, rose above New York City’s skyline in 1899 and stood as the tallest building until 1908. Located in the bustling “Newspaper Row,” it housed tenants like the Associated Press and saw 25,000 people pass through daily.
As the city grew and newspapers moved uptown, the building evolved. By the 1970s, it became a hub for consumer electronics, attracting music and electronics enthusiasts to the sprawling J&R store.
With downtown’s shift from offices to apartments, Park Row adapted, converting its upper floors into residential spaces and updating its interiors. The building remains central to the neighborhood’s energy, surrounded by new developments, renovations, and a vibrant food and shopping scene. Its history continues to unfold, reflecting the city’s constant evolution.
