12 Story Class B Office Building, Multiple Floors Available
The land that now hosts 30 Wall Street has a rich history, beginning as the site of the Verplanck mansion until its sale to the Bank of the United States in 1822. This location served as a Branch Bank until its closure in 1837.
Subsequently, it became the property of the Bank of the State of New York and was eventually sold to the U.S. government, which repurposed it as an assay office for testing gold from California and other sources.
By 1912, the original structure was facing serious structural issues and was no longer suitable for use. Before its scheduled demolition, the building’s Georgian façade was carefully dismantled and later repurposed as the entrance to the American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In 1915, construction began on a new three-story limestone structure, which remains in place today as the United States Assay Office. This building withstood challenges, including a significant explosion caused by a horse-drawn carriage that rocked Wall Street on September 16, 1920.
In 1953, Seamen’s Bank for Savings acquired the property and added a 12-story tower to enhance its presence. The building changed hands again in 1986 and has since evolved into a versatile venue for various corporate and private events on its first two floors.
