Completed in 1931 for Texas businessman Jesse H. Jones’s Houston Properties, 275 Madison Avenue anchors the Murray Hill skyline with 43 stories of streamlined height. Architect Kenneth Franzheim blended late-Art Deco ornament and the emerging International Style: a polished-granite, three-level podium with wide display openings supports a slender shaft of white-brick pilasters and dark metal spandrels that draw the eye straight upward before tapering into a setback rectangle near the crown.

Opened on the eve of the Great Depression, the tower was purchased by the New York Trust Company in 1933 and went on to host marquee tenants such as Johns-Manville and American Home Products—hence its alternate names. In 2009 the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission granted the building official landmark status, recognizing its architectural and historical significance. Today it is overseen by RPW Group.
