7 Story Class B Office Building
Standing proudly at the intersection of 5th Avenue and East 19th Street, 115 Fifth Avenue is a striking historic structure in the heart of Manhattan’s Flatiron District, within the celebrated Ladies’ Mile Historic District. Designed by renowned architect Griffith Thomas and completed between 1868 and 1869, this elegant seven-story building was originally commissioned as the flagship store for Arnold Constable & Company—one of New York’s most prestigious 19th-century dry-goods merchants.
Nicknamed “The Palace of Trade,” the building embodied opulence and innovation. Its architectural character reflects the ornate Second Empire style, highlighted by a dramatic two-story mansard roof, a stately cast-iron facade along Fifth Avenue, and a marble frontage facing Broadway. The structure quickly became a cornerstone of the Ladies’ Mile, a district famed for its fashionable department stores and elite clientele.
Founded in 1825 by Aaron Arnold, Arnold Constable & Company flourished as a purveyor of fine goods to New York’s high society. The firm expanded this building multiple times—first moving into the space in 1869, then stretching it to encompass 881–887 Broadway by 1877. Noteworthy additions include a connecting annex on East 18th Street in the 1880s and a 12-story tower added in the 1890s.
After the company relocated uptown in 1914, the building transitioned to new uses, at one point housing a branch of the New York Public Library. Over the decades, it has hosted a variety of retail tenants, including Victoria’s Secret and ABC Carpet & Home, blending historical grandeur with contemporary commerce.
2024 Flatiron District office space rent prices in Class B around: $40-65 per square foot.
