Originally called the Metropolitan Life North Building,Madison Avenue was designed by architects Harvey Wiley Corbett and Dan Everett Wade in 1928, with completion in 1950.
Wade, the house architect for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, and Corbett, a leading proponent of skyscraper design in the US, envisioned this building as a towering 100-story spire that would have been the tallest in the world.
However, the Great Depression halted the ambitious plan, and the structure was finished with 30 floors, although the base was designed to accommodate an additional 70 stories.
A prime example of Art Deco architecture, the building showcases the era’s setback design principles, forming a sculptural mass of Alabama limestone. It rises in a series of interconnected bays, with arches at each corner that open into an elegant double-height lobby adorned with marble inlay and ceiling designs.
Renovated between 1994 and 1997 by Haines Lundberg Waehler, Madison Avenue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Today, it stands as a stunning architectural landmark in Midtown South.
