The building at Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, New York, is part of the historic Knickerbocker Trust Company complex and remains a notable example of early 20th-century commercial architecture.
Completed in 1901, the 12-story structure was designed by architect Augustus D. Shepard, Jr. It formed the southern section of a two-building office complex, alongside Fifth Avenue, which was designed by the distinguished firm McKim, Mead & White.
The original Knickerbocker Trust Company headquarters, built in 1904, was a five-story Beaux-Arts building. In 1921, nine additional floors were added, giving it the scale of a modern high-rise of its era.
In 1958, the two neighboring structures were unified by a shared five-story base, replacing McKim, Mead & White’s temple-like façade with a sleek, unornamented exterior more in line with mid-20th-century design trends.
The building is closely tied to the history of the Knickerbocker Trust Company, which played a pivotal role in the Panic of 1907, a financial crisis that ultimately led to the creation of the Federal Reserve System in 1913. Although the company nearly collapsed, it soon reopened and repaid all depositors with interest.
In 1912, Knickerbocker merged with Columbia Trust Company, becoming Columbia-Knickerbocker Trust, which was absorbed by Irving Trust in 1923 and eventually became part of the Bank of New York in 1989.
Today, Fifth Avenue serves as a Class B office and medical building, interconnected with its neighbor at 358 Fifth Avenue. It offers a range of flexible leasing options, from small private offices to entire floors.
Its prime location near major transit hubs — including Herald Square subway, PATH at 33rd Street, and Penn Station — makes it a highly desirable address for businesses and medical practices alike.
